Access

Access dictates who gets what and where. Exploring the concept of Access can help us analyze and break down the arbitrary borders, boundaries and limits people face in their lives. I would like to expose the biases, motivations and beliefs that restrict access in order to create a more inclusive society. I believe that increasing awareness around access can shift our understanding and relationship to the rules in place that dictate who has access and who does not.
I believe over the years we as a society have slowly been making progress in the right direction in the way of inclusivity and expanding human rights; however, I think we have a long way to go until we are able to uphold those rights and provide safety, security and opportunity that almost always accompany access. My goal is to push to expand our collective definitions of human rights and dignity, and allow access to all people regardless of circumstance. As our society evolves, we are forced to reconcile that our culture changes, and the needs of those in our society change as well. For example, access to the internet is imperative for most jobs and education nowadays which I classify as a peripheral need; however, we are still struggling to give people access to basic needs like clean water in our own country. Failing to provide access for basic human needs that have been established for millennia, demonstrates how distorted our system actually is, and how important it is that we shift our priorities to increase access to these basic needs, as well as access to new peripheral needs.
Page 2 of my big idea book is my riff on a political cartoon; absurd and obtuse. I feel that a lot of the change that I would like to see would happen on a larger scale and some of it is in the political arena at this moment, so political commentary seemed appropriate.
